Some festivals are non-competitive, but offer screenings for exposure and opportunities.
Even then, there is a competitive element to getting selected for this or any official screening. It's an award in itself. That's why you'll see laurels that state "Official Selection".
Those selections often then run for an award, but sometimes a film runs outside the awards competition when it is outside the official festival categories. For example, the Buckingham Independent Film Festival, which offers a competition for film shorts, will be running our feature after selected shorts, on one evening.Festivals have time considerations, so it's an honor when one chooses to give a longer feature film that much time.
